METRO DE MADRID AWARDS ATS A CONTRACT FOR THE IMPLEMENTATION OF A PLM SYSTEM FOR THE INTEGRATED MANAGEMENT OF ITS FLEET.

02 October, 2024

Metro de Madrid has selected the Spanish division of ATS Global to implement a product lifecycle management (PLM) system that will optimise the maintenance, operation and traceability of its fleet vehicles and equipment. The project will be developed through the Teamcenter solution, a Siemens platform that will allow the transport company to centralise and secure the document and technical management of all the components of its fleet.

The main objective of this project is to guarantee the integral traceability of the materials, equipment and components of Metro de Madrid's vehicles throughout their life cycle, from purchase to dismantling. This will provide greater operational efficiency and optimisation of maintenance processes, minimising downtime and ensuring that all operations comply with the strictest safety regulations.

Optimisation through PLM technologies

The concept of product lifecycle management (PLM) has its roots in the manufcturing industry, where it is widely used to manage the entire production process, from initial design to product retirement. However, its application in sectors such as transportation or public infrastructure management, as in this case, underscores the growing convergence between the industrial and utility sectors, which are looking to leverage advanced manufacturing tools to improve the management and maintenance of critical assets.

The PLM solution with Teamcenter will allow Metro de Madrid to have more detailed control of technical data, better monitoring of maintenance interventions and greater responsiveness to potential operational problems. This is particularly relevant in the context of transport, where safety and efficiency are key issues. By integrating advanced manufacturing technologies such as PLM, Metro de Madrid seeks to reduce long-term operating costs and maximise the lifetime of its fleet.

Importance of traceability in the transport industry

Traceability, a key component of PLM systems, is especially relevant in regulated industries such as transport. Thanks to this technology, Metro de Madrid will be able to track every single component of its vehicles in real time, ensuring that certified parts are used and that every maintenance intervention is accurately recorded. This not only increases passenger safety, but also improves resource planning and management capabilities.

In addition, ATS, as a technology partner in this project, brings its experience in the implementation of advanced industrial management solutions, having previously worked on highly complex projects in the transport and other industrial sectors.

Future of the implementation

The PLM implementation project will start in 2024 and is expected to be completed by 2029. During this time, ATS and Metro de Madrid will work closely together to ensure that the PLM platform covers all operational, maintenance and safety needs. This collaboration will further strengthen ATS' position as a strategic partner in the transport sector, while Metro de Madrid will benefit from the advantages offered by advanced manufacturing technologies in complex asset management.

In summary, the implementation of the PLM system with Teamcenter at Metro de Madrid represents an important step towards modernising its fleet and improving its operational efficiency, highlighting the increasingly relevant role of advanced manufacturing technologies in sectors outside traditional industrial production.
