Renishaw, a global leader in intelligent manufacturing systems and metrology, has developed an innovative range of calibration solutions aimed at integrating machine-tool process control into industrial robotic automation. These solutions are already being adopted by key industries, offering enhanced precision and productivity in demanding applications.
According to Iñigo Bereterbide, Product Manager at Renishaw Ibérica, the new tools target companies employing robots for tasks such as machining or welding complex geometries, helping automate these challenging processes. The solutions enable real-time determination of the exact position of workpieces and tools, reducing machining errors and associated costs.
Advanced technologies for greater accuracy
Renishaw’s calibration solutions apply principles similar to those used in 5-axis machining, employing probing strategies to ensure that machining is aligned with the actual position of the workpiece. These technologies also allow probing points to be defined directly in CAD 3D models, eliminating manual intervention and enhancing process flexibility and precision.
Industry applications
A notable example of these solutions in action is eProject4, a Catalan company specializing in robotics and automation for sectors such as automotive, aerospace, and food. The company has integrated Renishaw probes with Stäubli robots, achieving automated Tool Center Point (TCP) calibration that eliminates manual interventions and significantly reduces robot downtime.
Ramon Villaró, Technical Manager at eProject4, noted that the setup process was quick and delivered excellent results. “Previously, we needed a specialized technician and a full day of robot downtime. Now, the process runs automatically, saving time and ensuring reproducible outcomes.”
Scenarios and benefits
Renishaw’s calibration solutions allow for TCP updates in two main scenarios. In scheduled processes, the adjustment is fully automated and completed in under two minutes. In collision cases, an operator repositions the reference tool before initiating the adjustment, also completing the process in minimal time.
With broad compatibility across robot brands and easy integration, Renishaw’s solutions are poised to play a crucial role in advanced industrial automation. Bereterbide emphasized, “These solutions hold immense potential for companies requiring precision and repeatability in complex applications.”
